Trees are one of the most valuable parts of your landscape and property! The shade they provide can reduce surface temperatures by up to 45 degrees! They provide a home for many different types of wildlife and, most importantly, they clean the air we breathe. At Hollar Tree Company our certified arborists use proper, industry standard practices to prune your trees. We understand that urban trees are often in competition with other trees, shrubs, buildings, sidewalks and roads. No tree is the same and the scope of work that we prescribe shouldn’t be either. We will work with you to develop a prescription tailored to your trees’ health, age, size and location.
How do we prune your trees?!
By climbing of course! It’s our favorite part of the job. We have over 15 years combined experience in climbing trees. Each tree is unique and it is a fun challenge to work through their structure. This also gives us a very up close and personal approach to trimming your tree.

What pruning does my tree need (if any)?
Young trees will benefit from structural pruning cuts early in their growth. This can help prevent major issues years in the future by making small, less damaging cuts to the tree when it is still aggressively growing. Think of it as “training” for young trees. We will be trimming to maintain a dominant, central leader, much like trees growing in the forest have. Urban trees typically have less competition for sunlight than trees in the forest and therefore are able to spread out and stay shorter because they are not reaching for the sunlight. Picture a large, mature tree in a City park that has grown with to competition from other trees vs a stand of trees in a forest; the park tree will have several larger leads that give the tree multiple “tops” where the trees in the stand will have a recognizable central trunk with one top. Because urban trees are typically planted in areas where they will eventually need to be trimmed away from obstacles, the best time to start doing so is then when they are young so we are not having to remove large healthy sections of the tree later on that will cause much more stress to the tree.

Mature trees
Our focus on trimming older and/or larger trees will be on working with the trees’ current form and preserving it for years to come. This means reducing the end-weight of branches throughout the canopy. This alleviates the amount of extra stress that is put on the tree during heaving snows or high winds, both of which cause most of the damage to trees. We will also be focusing on removing deadwood, both large and small, and making any necessary cuts to keep the tree from encroaching on nearby buildings, sidewalks, roads, etc.
Crown Cleaning
This is the removal of dead branches and limbs throughout the canopy. The goal here is to help the tree combat decay and insect infestation by removing the dead wood and allowing the tree to start the process of compartmentalization to fight off decay. Crown Cleaning will also greatly improve the aesthetics of your trees

Crown Thinning
This is the selective removal of live growth throughout the upper and outer canopy. Done properly, this will allow more light and air to penetrate the canopy and reduce the end-weight on branches. It requires much more time and skill than just deadwooding or raising the crown. We will be climbing farther out onto limbs to make the correct cuts. We will also be pruning with an eye toward development of a better structure of the tree or maintaining an existing structure if the tree is already in decent shape.
Crown Reduction
This is done to decrease the height of a tree overall or the length of just one or two larger leads if they are starting to either encroach on buildings or present a safety hazard if they were to fail. This often involves making larger cuts in the tree than are made during Crown Thinning and should only be entrusted to certified arborists. There is a big difference between Crown Reduction and “topping” trees, a practice that can severely harm trees and even put them into decline. Topping is indiscriminate, proper Crown Reduction requires knowledge of tree structure and good tree climbing skills.

Crown Raising
This is just removing lower branches that are causing clearance issues for surrounding buildings, sidewalks, roads, mowing, etc. Some Cities have codes that require your street-side trees to be maintained to a certain clearance-height.
Safety Pruning of older trees
No tree lives forever but, in the case of older trees that are nearing the end of their lives in the urban environment, we can do a “safety prune” to remove larger dead wood and any decayed or hollow branches that could hurt people or property, while retaining as much of the live, green growth as possible. This would only be done if the trees’ overall structure is still safe enough to leave standing or as long as it is not declining at a rate that it would not make sense to try and save. This is something we will discuss with you when we come out to give you a quote for the work. We will recommend the most cost effective option
